[edit] Major airports

The following three airports are all operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and concentrate on scheduled passenger service.

Airport name Airport code
John F. Kennedy International Airport JFK
Newark Liberty International Airport EWR
LaGuardia International Airport LGA

An IATA code “NYC” is reserved to refer to these three airports, although its term “All Airports, New York, United States” is somewhat misleading.

[edit] Other airports

Teterboro is the main general aviation reliever for New York City and is also operated by the Port Authority of NY & NJ. Westchester, Stewart, and Tweed New Haven airports handle some scheduled passenger service. Additionally, Long Island MacArthur Airport in Ronkonkoma handles domestic commercial and general aviation. Situated near the Ronkonkoma station of the Long Island Rail Road, outside of New York terminal airspace, it is still represented as a New York airport by Southwest Airlines. Although Stewart International has the infrastructure to support large aircraft (and even the space shuttle), it currently has only domestic commercial service. The airport's lease was bought by the Port Authority in January 2007 after a period of unprofitable privatization. Essex County Airport, 15 minutes from New York City, with direct transit line to downtown Manhattan, is primarily used by trainers and light jets. The remaining airports serve primarily general aviation, and provide service for both New York City and their local areas.
