The southern terminus of the route is at the New Jersey state line in Palisades, where it becomes County Route 501. The northern terminus is signed as NY 303 in Orangeburg; however, according to NYSDOT, the route continues for another 0.07 miles (0.11 km) to the northwest of NY 303.

[edit] Route description

As signed, NY 340 begins here at NY 303 in Orangeburg.

NY 340 begins at the New Jersey-New York border in Palisades. Directly south of the border is Rockleigh, in which NY 340 continues as Bergen County Route 501. Quickly into its route, NY 340 crosses the Palisades Interstate Parkway in Palisades, but does not intersect the parkway. After crossing the PIP, NY 340 enters Sparkill. Here it passes Rockland Country Club and John O'Rourke Memorial Park.[2]

NY 340 eastbound as it heads into the village of Sparkill.

NY 340 the proceeds into downtown Sparkill. NY 340 comes very close to US 9W and intersects CR 8. This is the only county route that NY 340 comes in contact with. Following NY 340's exact route also becomes somewhat confusing as roads are poorly signed in Sparkill. North of Sparkill, NY 340 briefly enters Piermont, and has an indirect intersection with US 9W. Finally, NY 340 enters Orangeburg, where it passes St. Thomas Aquinas College. After it passes the college, NY 340 comes to its northern terminus at NY 303. It comes close to CR 20's eastern terminus in Orangeburg.[2]
