Nicolás Martín Pareja (born 19 January 1984) is an Argentine footballer who plays for Spanish club Sevilla FC as a central defender.

Club career[edit]

Born in Buenos Aires, Pareja was bought for €2 million by Anderlecht in 2006 as a replacement for Vincent Kompany.[1] Despite some injury problems, Pareja became a reliable force in the central defence of Anderlecht, alongside Roland Juhasz. He won the Belgian Jupiler League with Anderlecht in 2007. His performances resulted in a call up for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing where Argentina won the tournament with Pareja in the central defense.

His outstanding play at the tournament resulted in interest from the big European leagues, as RCD Espanyol and Tottenham Hotspur were reported to have put an offer for Pareja at RSC Anderlecht. Espanyol won the struggle for Pareja, as Anderlecht and the team agreed a fee of €4.5 million for the player. He has been called up to the national team by Diego Maradona for a friendly against Russia as well as for World Cup Qualifiers against Brazil and Paraguay.[2]

In August 2010, Pareja joined Russian giants Spartak Moscow.[3] After featuring regularly in his first two campaigns, he appeared in only 12 matches during his third, due to rotations with Salvatore Bocchetti and Juan Insaurralde.

On 4 July 2013 Pareja was loaned to La Liga's Sevilla FC.[4] He appeared regularly in the league during the campaign, and was also selected among the 18-man Europa League "Squad of the season" (along with teammates Ivan Rakitić, Stéphane Mbia and Beto).[5] On 23 June 2014, the Andalusians activated his buyout clause for €2.5 million, with Pareja signing a three-year deal.[6]
