The North Carolina Progress Board is a non-partisan organization established in 1995 by the legislature of the state of North Carolina to monitor trends that affect lives of citizens in a variety of key areas. It was created by the legislature to in theory provide an independent means to track and report progress in eight key areas (see [Scorecard]http://www.ncprogress.org/scorecard.htm and Imperatives on the organization's [website]http://www.ncprogress.org).

The organization thrived for a number of years until Governor Mike Easley and one of his advisors (Pope (Mac) McCorkle decided that reports developed by the organization were not casting a positive spin about the Governor during times when his achievements were much less than expected. The Governor had legislation introduced to de-fund the organization and when the 2006 budget update was approved the organization was forced into a state of suspension in December, 2006. This was an unfortunate turn of events for state citizens because the North Carolina Progress Board was the only organization that accurately followed trends on key areas the state is expected to improve and suspending work of the group left citizens with no accurate measure of trends within the state.

The Progress Board tracks historical and projected trends tied to public needs and resources as well as providing insight into North Carolina’s competitive status. GIS maps from the state's Warren Wilson College posted on the website summarize a few of the indicators the Progress Board has been tracking and reporting to citizens.
