North Long Beach (or "Northtown") is a predominantly working class area of Long Beach, California. The neighborhood is bounded to the west, north and east by the Long Beach city limits (the Rancho Dominguez unincorporated county area and the cities of Compton, Paramount, Bellflower and Lakewood), and to the south by Del Amo Blvd and the Bixby Knolls neighborhood. The north boundary with Paramount is only a few blocks north of the 91 - Artesia Freeway. The neighborhood more or less coincides with the city's 9th Council district.

North Long Beach is mostly residential. There is a business and retail district centered at the 5600 block of Atlantic Avenue, as well as retail activity along most major streets in the area, including Artesia Blvd., Long Beach Blvd., and Cherry Ave. There are some industrial businesses, mostly along the eastern edge of North Long Beach between Cherry Ave. and Paramount Blvd. serviced by the Union Pacific Railroad.

The northern end of the district is home to Houghton Park and Jordan High School, while the southern end includes the Carmelitos housing project and its adjacent small shopping center. On its west side, at approximately Market St. and Long Beach Blvd., is the site of the original Long Beach civic center dating back to the city's Rancho days. The Long Beach Police Department's North Division operates a substation on the corner of Atlantic and Del Amo, at Scherer Park.

North Long Beach, once a predominantly white working-class neighborhood, has become increasingly diverse since the 1970's. According to the 2000 U.S. Census, the neighborhood was home to over 90,000 people (roughly one-fifth of the total population of the city). Roughly 46% of the population was Hispanic or Latino, roughly 24% were Black or African-American, roughly 15% were non-Hispanic white, and roughly 10% Asian. There is also a significant Samoan population in North Long Beach.

Some of the poorest areas of the city are on the North Side, including the Carmelitos housing project operated by the Long Beach Housing Authority, the Parwood Apartments on Paramount north of Candlewood Ave (near the border with Lakewood), and a large section of low-income apartments along the west side of Atlantic Ave across the street from Houghton Park. Crime and gang activity in North Long Beach are higher than average, but low compared with neighboring Compton or other areas of Long Beach itself. As in many parts of the LA area, much of the gang violence in the area has racial undercurrents, especially between local Crip gangs and the North Side Longos Hispanic gang.


The neighborhood is nearly exactly coterminous with the 90805 ZIP code.
