[edit] History
The land on which Northwood Hills, Northwood and Haste Hill Golf Club now stand was once the Great Common Wood. This covered 860 acres (350 ha) in the 16th century, which residents would use for grazing their livestock and collecting firewood. Robert Cecil, 1st Earl of Salisbury, sold off 568 acres (230 ha) of the wood in 1608 for £4000. The remaining woodland became Copse Wood, part of the Ruislip Woods.[2]
Northwood Hills was built during the 1930s by the Belton Estates company led by Harry Peachey,[3] while Harry Neal was responsible for building the shopping parade in Joel Street. The name had been chosen in a competition by a woman from North Harrow.[4] The first houses were built in Potter Street.[4]
The Northwood Hills public house (formerly known as the Northwood Hills Hotel) opposite the tube station is accredited as where Sir Elton John first performed professionally.[5] A picture of the pub appears on one of his album covers.
Each May one of the largest Scout Jumble sales in the country is held by 1st Northwood on the land next to their headquarters called the Hogs Back.
The local residents' association and chamber of commerce joined forces in May 2010 calling for greater recognition of the area.[6] In May 2011, the London Borough of Hillingdon announced Northwood Hills would receive £400,000 in funding for regeneration work.[7]
[edit] Education
Northwood secondary school and Sixth Form is located in Potter Street (the former name of the school). The Olympic boxer Audley Harrison and Big Brother contestant Nikki Grahame are alumni of the school.[3]
Haydon School, opened in September 1977 from the union of St Nicholas Grammar School For Boys and St Mary's Grammar School For Girls, is also within the town and was named after a local family. Television presenter Fearne Cotton was once a pupil.
[edit] Transport
Northwood Hills tube station is served by the Metropolitan line of the London Underground.[8]
