Nuevo Cuscatlán is a municipality in the La Libertad department of El Salvador. It is situated between the cities of Antiguo Cuscatlán and Santa Tecla, just a couple of minutes away from El Salvador's capital, San Salvador. It is located southeast of Santa Tecla. During the 2012 municipal elections, Nayib Bukele, a young businessman, from the FMLN (Frente Farabundo Martí para la Liberación Nacional) party was elected as mayor. He renounced his salary which was unheard of in El Salvador politics and didn't fire anyone (a common action in El Salvador, when an opposition party is elected into office). Mayor Bukele has been supportive of freedom of speech. Social programs were strengthened and he has been working to attract entrepreneurial investment to his town. Investment in the village of Nuevo Cuscatlan is extremely high compared to surrounding municipalities. One of the most controversial things that Nayib Bukele did was when he fined a company for cutting down a sector of trees in the Cordillera del Balsamo region, hence the municipality has experienced its highest rate of ecological and environmental responsibility during his tenure. The Cordillera del Balsamo is a crucial region in El Salvador, considering that it's one of the few areas of the small nation that has been intact for many years, this region is responsible for water absorption and replenishment of aquifers in the Southwestern region of the San Salvador Metropolitan Area. However Nayib has let other residential projects into the area thus contributing to the deforestation problem that is rampant through El Salvador.
He ordered his staff to award free full college scholarships to any student of low income, resident of the municipality, with good grades (a minimum average of 7.5 out of 10); to provide quality healthcare to all low income residents paid for by the municipality.
The mayor has been criticized by the right as a socialist, despite these criticisms he has 90% approval rating in a historically right-wing voting municipality. The main infrastructure project, Bulevar Cuscatlán, is a project that spans over less than one kilometer and is central to attracting new business. Nuevo Cuscatlán fame has also helped the mayor to attract international aid, from organizations like USAID, UKAID, the OAS.
