The stadium was opened on April 1, 2005, with Kent State losing to Ohio 6-2 in front of 476 fans. The field cost an estimated $3,000,000 in construction costs. A $1.53 million donation by Steve Schoonover covered much of the costs. Schoonover made the donation in the name of his parents, Hal and Julia Schoonover, for whom the field is named.
In 2006, area philanthropist Olga Mural donated $1,000,000 towards further renovations to the field. The playing field at Schoonover Stadium was named after her in recognition of the contribution. Prior to this, the stadium had been known as simply Schoonover Stadium.
