OneRiot was first launched in November 2008 as a search engine. The company's advertising network was introduced in September 2009 and was made available by January 2010. Previously, OneRiot marketed the service as a browser extension called Me.dium that allowed users to socially browse the web and communicate with others in real-time. The company was funded by Spark Capital, Appian Ventures, Commonwealth Capital Ventures, Brad Feld, Kimbal Musk, and Elon Musk.
In September 2011, the key assets of OneRiot were acquired by Walmart.
