[edit] History
OMC began in February 1971 in a small building on SE 12th and Jefferson in Portland. By 1976, they had outgrown their space and moved to a larger building on SE 2nd and Main. With the outdoor industry boom in the early 1980s, OMC moved to the Import Plaza Building in Old Town for yet more space. They were located in Old Town for 25 years. During this period, OMC also had an annex store in the Portland International Airport, but later consolidated with the recession of the industry that occurred in the early- to mid-1990s.
Facing a need for more still floor space and a larger warehouse to facilitate their burgeoning online business, they moved their store across the river to the Hollywood District. After renovating the former Rose City Upholstery building, they reopened in August 2004 at 2975 NE Sandy Blvd.[1]
After moving into the new space on the Eastside, Matt Rutkowski developed a new implementation of the receiving work flow, which is still the model in use today.
[edit] Media
OMC has been a resource for local television news stations during rescue attempts for climbers who have been stranded on Mount Hood and for lost hikers in the surrounding wilderness areas.[2]
