The Opera House in Bjørvika in February 2007

The New National Opera House is currently under construction at the head of the Oslofjord, in Bjørvika. Its builder is Statsbygg, a government-run property owner, and architects were Norwegian architects Snøhetta, winning an international architecture competition. The acoustic designers are BrekkeStrandArup, a joint venture between local consultant Brekke Strand Akustikk and international acousticians Arup Acoustics. Norwegian construction company Veidekke was awarded one of the largest building contracts of the project. The future user of the building will be the Norwegian National Opera.

The structure will provide a total area of 38,500 m² spanning 1100 rooms, one of which will have 1,350 seats and one with up to 400 seats.

The Opera House will, if all goes right, be finished in 2007 with the opening event planned for the Spring of 2008. Total expenditures for the building project is set at NOK 4 billion (approx. $ 700 million).
