Our Own English High School Sharjah

File:.jpgOur Own English High School, Sharjah is a branch of the chain of schools started GEMS (GEMS Education) across the cities of the United Arab Emirates.It was established in the year 1982. The school has completed its silver jubilee in 2007.

Sharjah Branch

Our Own English High School, Sharjah initially started with a modest strength of 55 students and 5 teachers in Ajman. The school today provides education to 10000 students with the help of a team of 200 plus teachers. Until 2007, the school followed a split shift pattern, with girls and the kindergarten attending school in the morning and the boys attending the school in the afternoon. In September 2007, there was a separate branch for Boys.

Curriculum

The school follows and is affiliated to the CBSE curriculum.

Administrative Structure

The Executive Principal of the school is Dr. Farooq Wasil. With over 25 years of involvement in Education, Dr. Farooq Ahmad Wasil, a doctorate specializing in Education, joined the GEMS Education in 1986 and assumed charge of Our Own English High School, Sharjah in 1994. He is currently the Executive Principal, Our Own English High School, Sharjah and Director – Asian Schools, Gems.

Dr.Wasil was honoured with the prestigious National Teacher Award awarded by the Ministry of Human Resources, receiving the award from the Ex-President of India Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam in September 2005. In recognition of leadership competency and contribution to Education, he was awarded the GEMS Fellowship - “Leadership for Learning: The Cambridge Network” Fellowship in January 2006 to research on Leadership Management at the University of Cambridge under Professor John MacBeath.

Rules and regulations about the uniform

• Students are to wear their uniform with honor and pride.
• All students are required to come smartly wearing the prescribed uniform
• The tie and the belt has to be worn at all times,shirts should be tucked in
• Birthdays and class parties can be celebrated with color dress,complete school uniform is required.
• Jewellery and make-up is allowed
• On excursions,students are not supposed to come in complete school uniform.
• Boys below 14 years of age should wear pants.
• Girls must wear their skirts 10 cm above knee level and their socks have to be just below the knees.
• Students should wear their uniform for any extra class.
• The uniform has to be an original GEMS product.
• Students failing to comply with the prescribed uniform could face severe punishment like expulsion.
• These are to be followed regularly and smiley points will be awarded to students who wear the cleanest uniform,and that student will be awarded with free uniforms for the next year.P.E uniform has to be worn on Thursdays

Punishable crimes and offences

Students are supposed to be on their best behaviour at all times.Back answering to the teachers or flirting to them is a punishable offence.No swear words are to be used.The uniform must be neat and tidy at all times,the tie should not be worn more than the waist,shirts should be tucked in at all times,and color dresses are strictly not permitted for any occasion.Shoes must always be polished,and all these laws regarding the uniform,if violated are punishable offences.

Punishments

The punishments to an offence varies according to the seriousness of the offence.The offences and the punishments are below

• Flirting:Note in calender and calling the parents of the concerned students to tell about the offence
• Back answering:Verbal punishments,and detention
• Late for school:Detention
• Fighting:Suspension for 4 days
• Wrong uniform:Caning,note in calender,detention for 3 months and expulsion

Note:Wrong uniform is an intolerable offence,and the concerned student will be caned very hard,and parents will be called up to take the concerned student back home,3 months detention will follow along with expulsion for a week.So it is best not to violate the uniform code

Extra classes and tuitions

Tuitions are considered as a positive policy for OOEHS students and students are recommended to go for tuitions from grade 7 itself.If parents do not find good tuitions,they can send those students for extra classes.In these extra classes uniform is required to be worn. Timings for those extra classes are

Subjects:Maths,Arabic,English,SST,Science Buses can pick and drop students if required

• Class parties for grades I-VIII is on December 21st 2011.Students are allowed to wear casual clothes.School gets over 2 hours early
• Desert Safari for grade 7 is on the 15th of december.Students are allowed to wear casual clothes come in school uniforms
• The school concert,directed by Kevin Oliver,is on the 20th and 21st of december.The charge is AED 75 and students HAVE to come in school uniform with their parents.
• A trip to NASA is being organised on the 21st of January.Interested students should pay 3000 AED.He should be accompanied by a parent.Students are requested to pack their uniforms as well,as they can only wear their uniforms on the trip.
• The open house is on 11th January,2012.Students should come in uniform.
