Overall critical reception was generally positive. Many critics[examples needed] called Oversteps a "return to form" and compared it with early ambient albums like Amber, while also stating that it goes in a new direction, not returning to an old one. Connections are often drawn to Quaristice, but are also said to be experimenting more on the ambient side, with Allmusic concluding that "Autechre finds the beauty in technical rigor".[1]
