Patrick Bowes-Lyon

Patrick Bowes-Lyon (born 5th. March 1863 in Belgravia, Middlesex – died 5th. October 1946 in Westerham, Kent) was a British tennis player, barrister and uncle of Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, mother of Elizabeth II.

Having been Scottish tennis champion in 1885, 1886 and 1888,he won the doubles at Wimbledon alongside Herbert Wilberforce. As a younger brother of Claude Bowes-Lyon, 14th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne, who was Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon's father, he was a great-uncle of Queen Elizabeth II.

The fifth of seven sons and one of the eleven children of Claude Bowes-Lyon, 13th Earl of Strathmore and Kinghorne and of Frances Dora Smith, he married Alice Wiltshire, daughter of George Wiltshire, on 9th. August 1893.

He and his wife Alice had four children:

  1. Lt. Gavin Patrick (born 13th. December 1895, killed in action in November 1917)
  2. Angus Patrick (born 22nd. October 1899, died 10th. July 1923)
  3. Jean Barbara (born 9th. October 1904, died 7th. January 1963)
  4. Margaret Ann (born 14th. June 1907, died 14th. August 1999) married 2nd. June 1946 Lt. Col. Francis Arthur Philip D'Abreu (born 1st. October 1904, died 6 November 1995). Had one son and two daughters: Anthony Patrick John D'Abreu (born 17th. March 1946), Francesca D'Abreu (born 7th. February 1948), and Anne Teresa Alice D'Abreu (born 16th. February 1950, died 17th. April 1995).
