[edit] History
Patrick Henry High School opened in 1967. The student body then consisted of juniors and sophomores only. Classes were scheduled around a twenty minute modular system with some classes consisting of two "mods" and others were three "mods". This allowed for extra time during the day that students could use for independent study. Most independent study time was spent with students talking to friends in the "quad". After two years, the experiment in independent study was stopped.[citation needed]
In the late 1970s Patrick Henry was the first of only a few high schools in the San Diego area to have a smoking section.
The school was designated a California Distinguished School in 1999.[citation needed] In 2000 and again in 2003, Newsweek Magazine listed Patrick Henry as being among the top one percent of high schools in the nation.[citation needed] The 2005 Academic Performance Index (API) has continued to rise and was 748 in 2009 (an API of 800 is the target).[citation needed]
[edit] College admissions
Annually about 40% of Patrick Henry graduates enroll in colleges and universities. In 2006 these included UCSD (8), UC Berkeley (6), UCLA (5), UC Irvine (4), Cal Poly San Luis Obispo (4), UCSB (4), UCSC (3), SDSU (51), Lewis and Clark (1), University of Puget Sound (2) and one each at Rice, Harvard, NYU, Purdue, USC, Johns Hopkins, MSU, Michigan State, Amherst, Arizona State, Vanderbilt, Tulane and Howard.[citation needed]

Patrick Henry High School's graduation requirements are consistent with the requirements of the San Diego Unified School District.
