Paul James Garred (born 23 May 1985) is the percussionist for the English indie rock band The Kooks[1]although he is not currently recording with the band.
Although the band was formed in Brighton, Garred was born in Seaford to Graham and Julia Garred. He attended Seaford Head Community College. When he was about 14 years old, he was in a local band called "Stairwell," who changed their name to "Little Help" before disbanding. Garred later attended the BRIT School in Croydon and met Luke Pritchard and Hugh Harris. They enrolled at the Brighton Institute of Modern Music where they met Max Rafferty and formed The Kooks. Garred's father died when he was 18 years old and he was inspired to write GAP as a result. He is also responsible for writing 'Seaside' which was the opening anthem for the band's live performances. Luke now sings it as part of his acoustic interlude as it is so popular with the crowd who seem to know every word whether they live in the UK, South America or Tokyo. His musical influences include The Police and Dire Straits.
During an interview with BBC Newsbeat, lead singer of The Kooks, Luke Pritchard, confirmed that Paul had been forced to take time out from the band due to a recurrence of a "nerve problem" in his arm [2].
He plays a Tama Starclassic Maple Blue Sparkle, Brushed Nickle Kit which includes the following:
18"x22" Bass Drum
6.5"x14" Bronze Snare Drum
7"x8" Tom Tom
8"x12" Tom Tom
16"x16" Floor Tom
5.5"x14" Aluminum Snare Drum
His hardware includes an Iron Cobra Rolling Glide Single Pedal and an Iron Cobra Hi-Hat Stand. He also uses Zildjian Cymbals.
