Penistone FM is a community radio station based in Penistone, South Yorkshire in the United Kingdom. The station is operated by Penistone Community Radio Limited, and gained its five-year community broadcast licence in December 2007. Penistone FM launched on Saturday 6 June 2009 at 09:57. During 2013 Penistone FM received a renewal on their license allowing them to broadcast for five more years.
Formed in 2005, Penistone FM attended the Penistone Mayor's Parade in June 2005 to conduct research into the viability of a station in this small market town, and again in 2006. In September 2006 the station broadcast on 87.7 FM using an Ofcom Restricted Service License as a trial community broadcast.
On the back of a successful trial broadcast, Penistone FM applied to Ofcom in the second Community Radio Licensing round in June 2007 and were awarded a full-time community radio license in December 2007. Initially the station was awarded a medium wave frequency, but one year later an FM frequency came available and was duly cleared by Ofcom in January 2009.
The station broadcasts from studios on High Street in Penistone and interacts with the community across Penistone and the surrounding area with interviews, features, news of local events and updates on the town's redevelopment. Penistone FM is a not-for-profit organisation that is run by volunteers. Local people are encouraged to volunteer on the station and receive training.
The station broadcasts to Hoylandswaine, Thurgoland, Cawthorne, Silkstone, Cubley, Thurlstone, Wortley and Oxspring. The FM signal is broadcast from an 8 metre high mast at Hoylandswaine and although of low power at only 20 watts, the station can be heard widely around North, West and South Yorkshire Sheffield, Barnsley and parts of Denby Dale, Wakefield, parts of Leeds, Doncaster, York Stocksbridge and Kirklees.
Content on the station includes a variety of genres, with more specialist programming on evenings and at weekends, with Country, Brass, Alternative and Soul being some of the genres covered. The station works with community groups and local organisations to promote activities and opportunities in the Penistone area.
