Plaistow (
/ˈplɑːstoʊ/ PLAH-stoh; often mispronounced PLAY-stoh or PLA-stoh) is a place in the London Borough of Newham in east London. The name has been suggested to come from Sir Hugh de Plaitz (spelling varies)[1][2], who married Philippa de Montfitchet, whose family owned the district, and it was she who is reputed to have named it the Manor of Plaiz[3]. A stow was a village so it was the village of Plaitz, or Plaitz-stow[4].
Plaistow formed part of the County Borough of West Ham in Essex until 1965, when West Ham joined with the County Borough of East Ham and small parts of Barking and Woolwich to form the London Borough of Newham.
Plaistow is a mainly residential area, including several council estates; the main road is the A112 - Plaistow Road, High Street, Broadway, Greengate Street and Prince Regent Lane. It contains relatively few shops and amenities. The Black Lion public house was frequented by West Ham United football (soccer) players such as Bobby Moore in the 1960s and 70s[5] .
Plaistow is currently[when?] undergoing extensive urban re-generation including replacement of council homes. Newham, of which Plaistow is part, was in 2007 the 6th most deprived borough in the UK[6] , and with an ethnically diverse population[7]; it is hoped[by whom?] the staging of the Olympic Games at nearby Stratford in 2012 will bring greater prosperity to the area.
Places of interest in the area include Plaistow Park, the East London Cemetery and Newham General Hospital.
Other amenities in the area include Newham Leisure Centre and Balaam Street Leisure Centre (pronounced "Baylam"). Singers David Essex, Ronnie Lane, Sandra Kerr, Jade Ewen and Mumzy Stranger were born in Plaistow. Joe Brown was born in Lincolnshire but lived in Plaistow from the age of 2. Record producer Norman Newell was born here.
