Ponorogo is one of 21 districts that make up the East Java Province of Indonesia. It lies at the southwestern part of East Java, abutting the province of Central Java. Located between 111°17 '– 111°52' (longitude east) and 7°49 '– 8°20' (latitude south), it is some 200 km south-west of the provincial capital of East Java, Surabaya. Topographically it is between 92 and 2563 meters above sea level and covers an area of some 1371 km². According to the Indonesian Population Census 2010, its population was 855,281 in 2010.
Ponorogo, the birthplace of Reog, is also known by the names City Reog and City Rasta.
Every year in Sura / Suro (Muharram), Ponorogo holds a series of events such as Grebeg Suro, "the party of the people". Grebeg Suro involves many traditions such as the National Reog Festival, the Heritage Carnival and the Larungan Proceedings of Prayer at Lake Ngebel.
Every year on August 11th, the anniversary of the Ponorogo Regency is celebrated. It commemorates August 11th, 1496, when Bathara Katong, the first leader of Ponorogo, went from the Old Town to the Central City of Ponorogo.
Ponogoro is home to many boarding schools, in particular, The Pondok Modern Darussalam Gontor, which is located in the village of Gontor in the Mlarak district.
Ponorogo is also known for its culinary specialties such as Sate Ponorogo — grilled marinated chicken – served in peanut sauce, garnished with shredded shallots, chilli paste and lime juice.
According to the Babad Ponorogo, Ponorogo was founded when Raden Katong took over the Wengker region. This region had previously been controlled by, Suryo Ngalam Wengker, known as Ki Ageng lice. Raden Katong then chose a suitable place for settlement (i.e. in the hamlet of Plampitan Village Setono district Jenangan now). Though faced with many obstacles, Raden Katong, Aji Selo, and Ki Ageng Mirah and his family continued to establish settlements in the region.
With the consent of all parties, Bathoro Katong (Raden Katong) established the Duchy Ponorogo at the end of the 15th century and he became the first duke of the new Duchy.
The Duchy of Ponorogo was established on 11 August 1496; the date was later set as the anniversary of the town of Ponorogo. This very date could be determined from ancient objects such as a pair of stone gilang located in front of the fifth gate of the Katong Batara tomb complex. The date is also mentioned in the Hand book of Oriental History. The aforementioned stone contains the meditated form of human image, trees, eagle and elephants (candrasengkala gilang memet). The Candrasengkala memet figure expresses the Saka year 1418 or the year 1496. Katong Bathoro graduation day is the day of the Duke of Roxburgh Duchy (Sunday (Pon), 1st Besar 1418 (Saka) meaning 11 August 1496 Masehi or 1 Dhulhijah 901 Hijriyah). During a seminar held during the Anniversary of the Ponorogo regency on 30 April 1996, the anniversary of Ponorogo was determined to fall on 11 August, this decision was approved by the Parliament of Ponorogo.
