Pope (from Latin: papa; from Greek: πάππας[1] (pappas),[2] an affectionate word for father) is a religious title traditionally accorded to the Bishop of Alexandria (origin) and the Bishop of Rome, as well as several other religious figures. The title Papa (Pope) was first used by Pope Heraclas of Alexandria who was the thirteenth Bishop of Alexandria, from 232 to 249. The title was assumed by John I, the Bishop of Rome, from 523 to 526.
Pope is also a surname, and has been used as a place name.
