Port Kembla Port Corporation
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Port Kembla Port Corporation is a corporation owned by the Government of New South Wales providing wharf and other maritime facilities at Port Kembla, near Wollongong.
In the 2003-2004 financial year, the port handled 22.1 million tonnes of cargo and welcomed 567 ships. The growth of the Illawarra region, and of Sydney to the north, has created significant opportunities for the port's future development. In addition, the state government's intention to end Sydney Harbour's status as a working port will doubtless see Port Kembla and Port Botany pick up the slack.
The corporation was established in 1995 by the Ports Corporatisation and Waterways Management Act 1995. The corporation reports to the Minister for Ports and Waterways, Joe Tripodi.
[edit] New Railway Link
Because existing railway links to Port Kembla are too steep, too congested or too long, the Port Kembla and others are seeking to complete the Maldon-Dombarton Railway.
