Backstreet Boys

The Backstreet Boys (sometimes referred to as BSB) are an American vocal group, formed in Orlando, Florida in 1993. The group consists of A. J. McLean, Howie Dorough, Brian Littrell, Nick Carter, and Kevin Richardson. They rose to fame with their debut international album, Backstreet Boys (1996), and to world superstardom with their album Millennium (1999) and its follow-up album, Black & Blue (2000).

After a two-year hiatus, they regrouped and released their comeback album Never Gone (2005). Richardson left the group in 2006, several months after the conclusion of the Never Gone tour to pursue other interests. The group then recorded and released two albums as a four-piece: Unbreakable (2007) and This Is Us (2009).

In 2011, the group co-headlined the NKOTBSB Tour with New Kids on the Block, and in 2012 Richardson rejoined them right after they finished the tour. As of July 2012, all members of the group are living together working on their new album in London.

The Backstreet Boys have sold over 130 million records worldwide, making them the best-selling boy band of all time, and one of the world's best-selling music artists. According to Billboard, they are the first group since Sade to have their first seven albums reach the top 10 on the Billboard 200.

"I Want It That Way" is a song by the Backstreet Boys, and their first single from their 1999 album Millennium. The song is still routinely played on both radio and video and the single has been highly critically acclaimed, winning and being nominated for various awards including, three Grammy nominations, MTV awards and Billboard Awards, as well as many others. It reached number 1 in over 25 countries and became the most successful single from a 'boy band'.

The acoustic-guitar arpeggio riff, which forms the song's intro and reiterates throughout the verses, was written at the very end of the recording sessions. The song is written in the key of F# minor and their vocals span from E4 to B5.

The song was originally not intended to be the first single, as Larger Than Life held that position. This was changed due to the group's desire to move in a more mature direction, by utilizing a mid-tempo track as the lead single. Zomba Recording executives had to be convinced to approve the song as the first single, due to them citing that the group could "alienate fans" with a mid-tempo song that had vague lyrical meaning. The group later recorded an alternate version with new lyrics that made more sense than the original, but later went back to the original lyrics.
