When they return to their lands, Reuben, Gad, and Machir build a large altar. The other tribes take offense at this, and prepare for war. Reuben, Gad, and Machir, respond by stating that the altar is only a symbol of their loyalty and not something to be used. The altar is named "Ed" (which translates as "witness") in memory.
