[edit] Geography

Portorož belongs to the coastal municipality of Piran, located in the southwest of the Gulf of Trieste (at the northern-most point of the Adriatic Sea) between the boundaries of Italy to the north and Croatia to the south. The municipality is not so well protected against bora wind, as is near city of Trieste. Thanks to that, Portorose is about 2 degrees cooler on average, with especially colder nights.

[edit] History

Development of Portorož as a summer resort started with completion of Parenzana narrow gauge railway, (operating 1902).

It soon became a meeting point of Austrian bourgeoisie and subsequently a tourist resort within Austrian Riviera. First luxury hotel, Hotel Palace, was completed in 1910.

After the decline of Austria-Hungary in 1918, Portorož was incorporated into Italy, and after WWII into Yugoslavia and it's republic Slovenia. It is now an important tourist destination on Slovenian coast.

[edit] Economy

Economy of Portorož is mainly based on tourism. The facilities include a marina,[3] several casinos, and numerous sporting facilities.

Portorož has been host to the Banka Koper Slovenia Open tennis tournament of WTA Tour since 2005.

Portorož was host to the International Physics Olympiad in 1985 and to the European Universities Debating Championships in 2001.

In 2008, the new Euro-Mediterranean University,[4] was inaugurated in collaboration with universities of the EU, the Middle-East and North Africa.
