[edit] Details of the Course
[edit] Admission Procedure
Typical of IIMs, PGSEM has a stringent two step process for admission into the program. In the first step applications are invited with a valid CAT or GMAT score. Candidates can also opt to appear for PGSEM entrance exam and use its score to apply. For the second step, institute invites the candidates for 2 rounds of interview after cross-normalizing the scores from the applications in first step. First round of interview is taken by the PGSEM alumni. Second interview, which carries more weightage, is take by various faculty members. Final admission offers are made on the basis of both the interviews.
[edit] Class Structure
2009 batch comprises of a class of 75 students in Bangalore. Classes are held regularly on fridays and saturdays.
[edit] Student Profile
The program curriculum covers general management concepts and is open to candidates who have more than two years of work experience and are working in an Information Technology company. While two years is considered as a mandate for the admission, the institute feels that a person with four to five years of IT experience would be the real benefactor from this course and hence such candidates are preferred. That said, people with more and less years of experience also make it to the course. The average years of experience of the candidates since the inception of the program have been 6 years for most of the batches. There is representation from all major IT companies spanning the length and breadth of the Indian sub-continent. (Employees from 100+ IT companies are currently doing this course).
[edit] Facilities
Program is very rigorous and PGSEM participants can access all the facilities available at IIMB campus. Many of the electives in the second year are held along with the PGPs (The regular MBA program at IIMB). PGSEM students are eligible to become exchange students in prestigious universities across the world and have to compete with there PGP counterparts to grab limited number of seats available. As an exchange student PGSEM student becomes a full time student.
As with PGP, PGSEM postgraduates are also offered waiver of one year of course work while pursuing FPMs (Fellow Program in Management).
This program does not offer any placement service to its students as is the case of PGP, primarily because each student in this course is expected to work with the consent of their employers.
[edit] Program Structure
Each academic year is subdivided into 4 quarters of 11 weeks each. The classes are held regularly on Fridays and Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 1 p.m.Typically, a participant can graduate in 2 and 1/2 years to 2 years 9 months, while continuing their regular work. For very rare cases in which students need to take a break due some personal or professional commitments, institute may allow to take a quarter off and resume the program on return. Taking a break is only allowed from second year onwards when all the core courses are completed. In such cases it will take longer to complete the program.
