Prehistory of association football

The following are the association football events before 1835 around the world.

• 3rd century BC Cuju (蹴鞠 or 蹴踘) begins to be played in China.
• 600 AD – Kemari begins to be played in Kyoto.
• 1314 – Edward II of England bans football in London.
• 1349 – Edward III of England bans football, favouring archery.
• 1424 – James I of Scotland bans 'fute-ball'.
• 16th century – Calcio Fiorentino begins in Florence.
• 1526 – Henry VIII of England orders the first known purpose made football boots.
• 1555 – Oxford University bans football.
• 1574 – Cambridge University bans football.
• 1602 – Richard Carew's "Survey of Cornwall" describes the Cornish games of "hurling to country" and "hurling to goals", the latter more similar to the modern game of rugby football.
• 1739 – In January, last known officially match Calcio Fiorentino played in Florence.
• 1747 – Eton College bans football.
• 1749 – Westminster School bans football.
• 1750 – Rugby, Harrow, Charterhouse, Shrewsbury and Winchester colleges ban football.
• 1835 – The Highway Act in England banned playing football in public streets.
