Primus Canada is a Canadian telecommunications company. Primus operates as a CLEC — buying services at wholesale rates and reselling them to consumers. The company offers long distance, wireless, VoIP, DSL Internet, and POTS to both the residential and business markets.
Primus was founded in 1997 as a wholly owned subsidiary of McLean, Virginia-based Primus Telecommunications Group, Incorporated[citation needed]. With over 700 employees, Primus has offices in many Canadian cities including Ottawa, Vancouver, Oakville, London, Windsor, Montreal, Toronto and Edmundston.
In early 2004, Primus Canada acquired Ottawa-based Magma Communications Ltd.[1], a small ISP with most of its customers based in Ottawa, Toronto, and surrounding areas[citation needed]. In 2006, Primus Canada then merged Magma's customer databases, services and call centers into its own organization, phasing out the Magma brand as time passes[citation needed]. The Ottawa building, formerly Magma headquarters, then changed all its outdoor signs and identity to the Primus brand.
The Better Business Bureau has given Primus Canada an "Unsatisfactory" rating for failure to respond adequately to customer complaints.[2]
