Projects Abroad (formerly Teaching & Projects Abroad) is a profit UK company that arranges volunteer placements in 24 countries worldwide. Volunteers teach conversational English or gain experience in medicine, conservation, journalism, business and many other professions. Volunteers range in age from 16-75. The projects have proved popular with gap year students, undergraduates, graduates and career breakers.[citation needed]
[edit] History
Projects Abroad was founded in 1992 (then known as Teaching Abroad) by Dr Peter Slowe.[1] a geographer. After a few years just sending volunteers to Eastern Europe teaching the company expanded to sending volunteers around the world doing a wide range of projects.[1] It was one of the first companies to organise gap years for volunteers overseas in large numbers.[citation needed] After becoming Teaching & Projects Abroad it became simply Projects Abroad in August 2007. Projects Abroad now has recruitment offices in Australia [2], Canada [3], Denmark, France [4], Germany [5], Netherlands [6], South Africa, Sweden [7] and USA [8].
Projects Abroad was a founding member of the Year Out Group and is a member of the IVPA(International Volunteer Programs Association).
Over 18,000 volunteers have joined Projects Abroad on programmes around the world at a rate of over 3,500 a year today.[citation needed] Volunteer projects run from 2 weeks to a year. Volunteers choose how long they want to join a project. Projects Abroad employs 250 staff worldwide to support the programmes.
