A prude (Old French prude)[1] is a person who is described as being excessively concerned with decorum, modesty or propriety.

Actions or beliefs that may cause someone to be labeled a prude include:

  • advocating or practicing abstinence.
  • advocating censorship of sexuality or nudity in the media
  • strict avoidance of any degree of even potential self-nudity in front of another person-- wearing non-revealing clothes at all times, using a separate, personalised changing-stall within a changing-room at an indoor public pool, et cetera.
  • disapproval of others being nude or showing breasts or other "private parts" to any degree in public (such as beaches, or by 'flashing'); avoiding or condemning any public display of affection; or exhibiting unusual levels of discomfort with others' sexuality.
  • condemnation of pornography, masturbation, orgasm or the discussion of any of these subjects between people in a social environment.
  • vocal advocacy of an end to alcohol, drugs or mischief. Moralizing on these and similar issues and framing their avoidance as the only "proper" way to be for all of humanity.
  • one who has never made out

The degree of prudery can vary among different cultural frames.
