List of government-owned corporations of Puerto Rico

The government-owned corporations of Puerto Rico are autonomous, independent, and self-sufficient legal entities owned entirely or in large by the executive branch of the government of Puerto Rico or its municipalities. These corporations engage in commercial activities with their revenues ultimately being allocated towards the government's treasury —the Puerto Rico Consolidated Fund— or the corresponding municipal treasury. Some corporations have been criticized since their creation since some of them are not profitable and depend on the issue of bonds or large indebtedness to operate,[1] or because they constitute a government monopoly or control a unique asset (such as a port, toll, or land).

Owned by the executive branch[edit]

As of November 2012, the executive branch of the government of Puerto Rico owned 51 government-owned corporations with an outstanding debt of $42B USD.[1][2][3][4][a]

Notes[edit]

  1. ^ In legal terms there are only 50 corporations owned by the executive branch. In reality however, the Ponce Port Authority is still owned by the executive branch even though it was legally transferred to the municipality of Ponce.[5] This increases the number of corporations owned by the executive branch to 51 in practice.
  2. ^ a b The Ponce Port Authority was legally transferred to the municipality of Ponce but is still owned by the Port of the Americas Authority which belongs to the executive branch.
