Puerto Tejada is a town and municipality in the Cauca Department, Colombia.

[edit] History

Established on September 17, 1897. General Manuel Tejada Sanchez founded the town, which was named after him. Puerto Tejada was founded to organize blacks in Colombia. During the 18th and 19th century, there were uprisings of both black slaves and free blacks in this region. After the abolition of slavery in 1852 the former slaves established themselves, forming family farms that produced coffee, corn, plantain, cassava and cacao. There was a thriving agricultural economy at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century.

Its first inhabitants settled at the banks of the Palo and Paila rivers. The blacks and mestizos are the descendants of the maroons who escaped to Monte Oscuro, now called Puerto Tejada. Before the town was settled, the area was referred to as Monte Oscuro (Dark Mountain) because of its dense tropical vegetation. The settlers were farmers and colonists who established a prosperous agricultural economy. Puerto Tejada was the result of the colonization of the plains. With the creation of the town, others towns surged around the area. [1][2][3][4][5]
