Pushchino

Pushchino (Russian: Пу́щино) is a town in Moscow Oblast, Russia, situated 120 kilometers (75 mi) south of Moscow, on the right side of the Oka River opposite the Prioksko-Terrasny Biosphere Reserve. As it can be confused with other towns with similar names, it is informally called Pushchino-on-Oka.[citation needed] Population: 20,263 (2010 Census preliminary results);[1] 19,964 (2002 Census);[2] 19,479 (1989 Census).[3]

Pushchino existed since the 16th century as a family estate after the land was awarded to the Pushchin family around the year 1500. The area was selected in 1956 as a site for a scientific research center for the Russian Academy of Science. It was incorporated as a city in 1966.
