Nelson Mandela's retirement home at Qunu

Qunu is a small rural village in South Africa's Eastern Cape Province, 32 km (20 mi) south-west of Mthatha on the road between Butterworth and Mthatha.

Mvezo on Mbashe River is near where Nelson Mandela was born, and Qunu is where he grew up and later retired[dubious ] after leaving office as South Africa's President in 1999. It is the village to which Nelson Mandela's father relocated after being deposed as Mvezo chief. In his autobiography Long Walk to Freedom, Mandela describes Qunu as where he spent the happiest moments of his childhood.
