Race (Hindi: रेस) is a 2008 action film directed by director duo Abbas-Mustan and produced under the Tips Films banner. Released on March 21, 2008 worldwide, it stars Anil Kapoor, Saif Ali Khan, Akshaye Khanna, Bipasha Basu, Sameera Reddy and Katrina Kaif in pivotal roles.
The film also stars Dilip Tahil and Johnny Lever for thriller and comedy sketches. Set and mostly filmed in Durban, South Africa and Dubai, Race is a comedy, thriller and action film which explores themes of sibling rivalry, betrayal and passion. The film is based on the 1998 Hollywood movie Goodbye Lover.The soundtrack was dubbed into Tamil as Panthayam and in Telugu as Race. [1]

Race is the story of two brothers, Ranvir Singh (Saif Ali Khan) and Rajeev Singh (Akshaye Khanna), who live on the edge of love. Winning is their birthright and dangerous their sport.

Set against the high flying social studies of modern India Race is about jealous and laughter, hilarious and revenge. Even love comes laced with a slow-motion. The stakes are too high. Double them and you have the perfect grounds for a perfect murderer. What was the game? Who held the meeting? The model with a past Sonia (Bipasha Basu), whom Rajeev loved or the beautiful secretary Sophia(Katrina Kaif), who loved Ranvir. The killing of Ranvir was the mission of Rajeev and something else happened.The sudden appearance of Inspector Robert D'Costa (Anil Kapoor) and his assistant Mini (Sameera Reddy), deep inside the plot into a fairy tale of drama at its best. With the brothers pitched against each other who will win? The one who plays to win or the one who plays to defeat?

Ranvir Singh the older of the two brothers is a ruthless business man who will not spot to win the game. Playing with danger is his passion and outsmarting his opponent his timepass.

Rajeev Singh the younger brother is spoilt, laid back and happy. But underneath the surface there lurks an anger which he tries to control with liquor. As a result both anger and liquor get the better of him and end up controlling him.

Sonia is a beautiful and glamorous model with a shady past. She's looking for a man who will keep her in his heart. She's waiting for the rich and handsome Ranvir Singh to propose to her.

Sophia is Ranvir Singh's beautiful and innocent looking secretary who shadows him around managing all his important matters. She is indespensable to Ranvir who trusts her completely but does not reciprocate her love.

Robert D'Costa is a private detective with the deceptive air of an idiot. He is constantly eating fruits while solving a case. He is sharp, resourceful and quick. His appearance in the story makes the plot thicken as he unravels one lie after the other.

Mini is the attractive and sexy assistant of Robert D'Costa who is like a dumb blonde. She constantly asks stupid questions and is forever relegated to cutting fruits or doing menial jobs for her boss.

Kabir is the rival of Ranbir in racing horses and Ranbir outsmarts him with a microphone in his pen.

Although receiving a extremely positive response from critics, Race went on to be the fifth Bollywood hit of 2008 behind Ghajini and Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi. The film opened with a total of Rs.35,61,00,000 in India, £880,423 in the United Kingdom and $ 1,376,024 in the United States of America. As of May 30, it grossed Rs.63,67,00,000 ($14,886,600) in India, and $9,505,321 in other parts bringing a worldwide total of $24,391,921. Taran Adharsh gave the film 4 out of 5 stars, stating that Race "is a superb entertainer all the way" and that it "has not just style, but a lot of substance too". Hanumant Bhansali praises the film and also says that Race is "a winner all the way". In contrast to Adharsh and Bhansali, Race also met with some negative reviews, forcing the response from critics to be mixed.

[edit] Controversy

Taiwanese singer Lee-Hom Wang and his record label Sony BMG Music Entertainment Ltd. are suing Tips Films, the distibutors of Race, $320,000 in damages, for plagiarising his song Deep in the Bamboo Grove(Zhu Lin Shen Chu) into Zara Zara touch me from the film.[2]

  • The track Khwab Dekhe (Sexy Lady) was recorded after the release of the soundtrack on 9th February. It replaced Mujhpe To Jadoo in the film. Tips Music then re-distributed the soundtrack, adding Sexy Lady, after the release of the film.
  • There is also a sequel to this movie,race2 but bipasha basu is replaced by kareena kapoor.
