A rail gun is a type of rifle that's barrel and mechanism has been built into a machine rest. The base of the rail gun uses adjustable feet to provide a stable position on the bench, and the rifle is aimed with horizontal and vertical adjustments built into the rest.

[edit] Benchrest shooting

Rail guns are used in Unlimited class benchrest shooting. With rifles such as these, many[who?] would argue that no shooting skill is involved, but this is considered a subjective criticism by rail gun proponents. While it is considerably more difficult to be consistent without a machine rest, for many shooters competition revolves around the pursuit of accuracy through intense preparation of rifle and ammunition and meticulous calculation of wind and weather conditions at the moment of firing. Minimization of skill with a rifle is therefore viewed as desirable. Thus, the machine rest represents the ideal method of delivering a shot, for those who consider the sport a challenge in pure accuracy.
