Cahul is a district (Moldovan: raion) in the south of Moldova, with the administrative center at Cahul. As of January 1, 2008, its population was 123,808.[1]

According to the last Moldovan census from 2004 there were 35,488 people living within the city of Cahul, making it the sixth largest city in Moldova.
Of this population, 78.1% are Moldovans/Romanians, 6.6 % Ukrainians, 6.5% Russians, 4.9% Bulgarians, 3,1% ethnic Gagauz and 0.8% others.

Due to its topography, the county is predominantly agricultural. Industry is concentrated in the city of Cahul.
The principal industries in the county are:

- Textile industry.

The "Nufărul Alb" ("White Nymphaea") Balneotherapy and Well-being Centre, located in Cahul, is well known for its thermal spas.
