C. M. Rice Middle School is a public secondary school within the Plano Independent School District. Sixth through eighth graders attend, feeding from Andrews Elementary, Skaggs Elementary, and Wyatt Elementary Schools. Rice, along with Robinson Middle School and Schimelpfenig Middle School, feed into Jasper High School (Grades 9-10) and then Plano West High School (Grades 11-12). In 2012, it was ranked 3rd out of the top 5 middle schools in the North Texas area by Children at Risk, a research and advocacy institute dedicated to helping children.

Rice Middle School, which opened in 1999, is named after Charles Millard Rice,[1] a farmer and a bank director of late 19th-century Plano, Texas. There were no eighth graders in its first year.

Awards[edit]

Rice Middle School has won many awards, such as taking its Whiz Quiz team to Whiz Quiz Nationals from 2008-2009 (7th grade), 2009-2010 (7th and 8th grade), 2010-2011 (8th grade). As well as producing many top qualifying Math Counts members and State Science Fair winners. The Music Department in Rice has been ranked near the top in state. Awards in the orchestra include being named Texas Honor Orchestra for 2009. In both years 2010-2011, the combined orchestra and band have won the Outstanding Orchestra of the Day award in the Peak Music Festival. In the years 2008-2011, it has had the most number of All-Region participants in Band, Choir, and Orchestra. In the year 2011, the Orchestra received a record-setting 30 exemplary awards to individual students in the annual Solo and Ensemble Festival.

(*)Plano ISD did not sponsor a nationals trip this year, but Rice was the district champion.
