Sixth through eighth graders attend, feeding from Andrews Elementary, Skaggs Elementary, and Wyatt Elementary Schools. Rice, along with Robinson Middle School, feeds into Jasper High School (Grades 9-10) and then Plano West High School (Grades 11-12). In 2012, it was ranked 3rd out of the top 5 middle schools in the North Texas area by Children at Risk, a research and advocacy institute dedicated to helping children.

Rice Middle School, which opened in 1999, is named after Charles Millard Rice,[1] a farmer and a bank director of late 19th-century Plano, Texas. There were no eighth graders in its first year.

Rice Middle School has won many awards, such as taking its Whiz Quiz team to Whiz Quiz Nationals from 2008-2009 (7th grade), 2009-2010 (7th and 8th grade), 2010-2011 (8th grade). As well as producing many top qualifying Math Counts members and State Science Fair winners. The Music Department in Rice has been ranked near the top in state. Awards in the orchestra include being named Texas Honor Orchestra for 2009. In the years 2008-2011, it has had the most number of All-Region participants in Band, Choir, and Orchestra.
