Rick Paul is an American attorney and managing partner of Paul McInnes LLP based in Kansas City, Missouri. He obtained his law degree at the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Law. After judicial clerkships at the Missouri Supreme Court and Missouri Court of Appeals, Western District, Paul went to work for the firm then known as Shughart Thomson & Kilroy (which later became Polsinelli) in 1996. He was then elected as a shareholder and director in 2002. In 2008, he moved his practice to Stueve Siegel Hanson, where he was a partner. He founded Paul McInnes in May 2013, with Jack McInnes.
Paul specializes in handling large-scale, high-stakes contingent fee litigation. He has recovered more than $300 million for his clients since he began his career.
Paul obtained his undergraduate degree in economics and political science from the University of Missouri in 1992. He then began studying law at the University of Missouri School of Law. While in law school, he served as the assistant managing editor of the Missouri Law Review. He graduated from law school in 1995.
After graduating from law school, Paul became a judicial law clerk at the Missouri Supreme Court for the Hon. Elwood Thomas. After J. Thomas’ untimely death, Paul became a judicial clerk at the Missouri Court of Appeals, Western District for the Hon. Edwin Smith.
In 1996, Paul went to work for Shughart Thomson & Kilroy, where he specialized in complex business, bankruptcy, product liability, and employment litigation. His work typically involved multi-parties, class or mass actions or bankruptcy estates. In 2002, he was elected a shareholder and director of Shughart Thomson. In 2008, Paul moved his practice to the Stueve Siegel Hanson law firm.
In May 2013, Paul started his own law firm, Paul McInnes LLP.
Throughout his career, Paul has handled a number of large and/or high profile cases. He served as co-lead counsel in an MDL that resulted in one of the largest automotive defect settlements of all time.
Among his many trials, he has tried two class action cases, obtaining multi-million dollar judgments in both. He also served as co-lead counsel in the In re Eclipse Aviation Depositor Litigation, which was settled for roughly $50 million.
Paul also obtained a settlement of roughly $63 million for the bankruptcy estate of the Mountain Energy Corporation as special trial counsel for the bankruptcy trustee. The settlement covered numerous cases and 14 parties.
As lead counsel in an FLSA collective action arbitration, Paul obtained a judgment of more than $2.9 million in unpaid overtime wages for nearly 3,000 current and former DISH call center employees.
