Riverdale is a Borough in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough population was 3,559.

Riverdale was incorporated as a borough by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature on March 12, 1923, from portions of Pequannock Township, subject to the results of a referendum passed on April 17, 1923.[6]

Riverdale is located at 40°59′24″N 74°18′37″W / 40.990032°N 74.310236°W / 40.990032; -74.310236 (40.990032, -74.310236).[7]

According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 2.1 square miles (5.4 km2), of which, 2.1 square miles (5.4 km2) is land and 0.48% is water.

Riverdale is bordered to the east by Pompton Lakes, to the north by Bloomingdale, to the west by Butler and Kinnelon, and to the south by Pequannock Township.

As of the census[3] of 2000, there were 2,498 people, 919 households, and 671 families residing in the borough. The population density was 1,215.2 people per square mile (468.2/km2). There were 940 housing units at an average density of 457.3 per square mile (176.2/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 93.39% White, 1.08% African American, 0.04% Native American, 2.72% Asian, 1.60% from other races, and 1.16% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.40% of the population.

Riverdale has a very substantial Italian population, with 25.1% of residents reporting that they were of Italian ancestry in the 2000 census.[9]

There were 919 households out of which 32.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.2% were married couples living together, 10.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.9% were non-families. 21.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.68 and the average family size was 3.14.

In the borough the population was spread out with 23.5% under the age of 18, 7.4% from 18 to 24, 33.5% from 25 to 44, 23.6% from 45 to 64, and 12.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 94.1 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.7 males.

The median income for a household in the borough was $71,083, and the median income for a family was $79,557. Males had a median income of $50,457 versus $41,420 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $31,187. About 3.0% of families and 5.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 6.9% of those under age 18 and 3.7% of those age 65 or over.

Riverdale is governed under the Borough form of New Jersey municipal government. The government consists of a Mayor and a Borough Council comprising six council members, with all positions elected at large. A Mayor is elected directly by the voters to a four-year term of office and only votes in case of a tie on the Council. The Borough Council consists of six members elected to serve three-year terms on a staggered basis, with two seats coming up for election each year.[1]

As of 2011, the Mayor of Riverdale is William Budesheim. Members of the Borough Council are Council President Paul Carelli, Garrett Astarita, Joseph Falkoski, Theodore Guis, Steve Loesner and Elaine Wetzel.[10]

[edit] Federal, state and county representation

Riverdale Borough is in the 11th Congressional district and is part of New Jersey's 40th Legislative District.[11]

New Jersey's Eleventh Congressional District is represented by Rodney Frelinghuysen (R, Harding Township). New Jersey is represented in the United States Senate by Frank Lautenberg (D, Cliffside Park) and Bob Menendez (D, Hoboken).

The 40th District of the New Jersey Legislature is represented in the State Senate by Kevin J. O'Toole (R, Cedar Grove) and in the General Assembly by Scott Rumana (R, Wayne) and David C. Russo (R, Ridgewood).[12] The Governor of New Jersey is Chris Christie (R, Mendham).[13] The Lieutenant Governor of New Jersey is Kim Guadagno (R, Monmouth Beach).[14]

Morris County is governed by a seven-member Board of Chosen Freeholders, who are elected at-large to three-year terms of office on a staggered basis, with two or three seats coming up for election each year.[15] As of 2011, Morris County's Freeholders are Freeholder Director William J. Chegwidden (Wharton),[16] Deputy Freeholder Director Douglas R. Cabana (Boonton Township),[17] Gene F. Feyl (Denville),[18] Ann F. Grassi (Parsippany-Troy Hills),[19] Thomas J. Mastrangelo (Montville),[20] John J. Murphy (Morris Township)[21] and Margaret Nordstrom (Washington Township).[22][23]

The Riverdale School District serves students in kindergarten through eighth grade. Riverdale Public School had an enrollment of 287 students as of the 2008-09 school year.[24]

Public school students in grades 9-12 attend Pompton Lakes High School in Pompton Lakes, as part of a sending/receiving relationship with the Pompton Lakes School District.[25]
