Robert M. Berdahl (born 1937) is an American historian, author and the interim President of the University of Oregon.

Born in Souix Falls SD Berdahl received a BA from Augustana College. He obtained a masters from the University of Illinois and following Dr. Otto Pflanze to the University of Minnisota where he got his his doctorate with a dissertation on Prussian Conservative Party during German unification around 1870 [1]. He was president of UT-Austin from 93-97 and then chancellor of the University of California, Berkeley from 1997 to 2004, and became president of the Association of American Universities (AAU) from May 2006 to June 2011 [2] In addition to his duties as interim President, he serves on the Board of Directors of Lam Research Corporation.[3]

In December, 2011, the Oregon State Board of Higher Education asked Berdahl to serve as the president of the University of Oregon on an interim basis. The presidency of the University of Oregon had recently been vacated by Richard Lariviere following his early termination by the state board. [4]

As interim President of the University of Oregon, Berdahl will focus on four key areas:[5]

  • Faculty recruitment and retention
  • Presidential search
  • Capital campaign
  • Independence in governance
