[edit] Club career
Born in Betxí, Castellón,[1] Roberto started playing professionally with CD Castellón in 1979, after emerging through the ranks of neighbours Villarreal CF. After two seasons, he moved to another outfit in the community, Valencia CF, proceeding to score an impressive 33 La Liga goals during his first four seasons, but would be relegated in 1985–86.
Subsequently, Roberto moved to FC Barcelona, scoring 10 goals in 40 matches in his debut season, including a penalty in a 2–1 home win against Real Madrid (which won that year's league, ahead of the Catalans).
After 144 league matches and 35 goals with Barça, aiding the club to two vice-championships, two Spanish Cups and the 1989 Cup Winners' Cup, Roberto returned to Valencia in 1990, helping the Che to two consecutive fourth league places (1991–93), and spending almost the entire 1993–94 in the sidelines, due to injury.
In 1995–96, another return, now to Villarreal, which was then in the second level. Roberto helped it achieve promotion in his third year and saw it get immediately relegated afterwards. He retired in 2001 at almost 39, after two second-division seasons with Córdoba CF.
Subsequently, after more than 700 official games, Roberto moved into coaching, for instance with Valencia's B side and lowly Orihuela CF.
