John-Roger is the author of over 55 books including four Bestsellers and a NY Times #1 Bestseller.[1][citation needed] His most recent books are 'The Rest of Your Life' (2007), 'Timeless Wisdoms: Volume One' (2008) and 'Timeless Wisdoms: Volume Two' (2008). John-Roger also produces his own national cable TV show That Which Is, and has appeared on other television and radio programs including CNN's Larry King Live, The Roseanne Show, and Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher.

In 1968, John-Roger founded the Church of the Movement of Spiritual Inner Awareness (MSIA), and incorporated it as a church in 1971.[2] MSIA is a nondenominational and ecumenical church whose purpose is to "teach Soul Transcendence, which is becoming aware of yourself as a Soul and as one with God, not as a theory, but as a living reality." [3] MSIA currently has participants in more than 32 countries, with its largest following in the US, Australia, Colombia, Brazil and Nigeria respectively,[4]

John-Roger has traveled extensively leading groups of up to 150 people on spiritual retreats know as Peace Awareness Trainings all over the world. His journeys have taken him to such places as the former USSR, Yugoslavia, China, Israel, Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, and throughout Africa, South America, North America, Australia and across Europe.[5]

John-Roger has founded many non-profit organizations. He is the founder and chancellor of the University of Santa Monica (USM), an unaccredited institution offering master's degrees in Spiritual Psychology and Consciousness, Health & Healing and a doctoral degree in Spiritual Pschology.[6] He is also the founder and president of Peace Theological Seminary & College of Philosophy (PTS), which offers undergraduate courses, workshops, retreats, and master's and doctorate programs in Spiritual Science; its headquarters is home to Peace Awareness Labyrinth and Gardens. He is also the Founder and Chairman of the Board of Insight Seminars [7] and is Founder and President of both the Institute for Individual & World Peace (IIWP) [8] and the Heartfelt Foundation.[9]

John-Roger is often referred to by friends and established students as "J-R". The most prominent public figure to have worked with him, with varying levels of dedication since the 1970s, is Arianna Huffington.[10][11] Other notable students of John-Roger are the Beach BoysCarl Wilson, model / actress Jaime King, author / management expert David Allen, actor Jsu Garcia and MSIA's current spiritual director, John Morton (author), author of You Are the Blessings, and contributor to The Huffington Post.[12]

Most recently John-Roger co-wrote and co-produced a film with long time student and close friend Jsu Garcia. The film Spiritual Warriors is inspired by one of John-Roger's bestselling books - 'Spiritual Warrior - The Art of Spiritual Living'.[13]

MSIA has been accused of being a cult by some former members and the Cult Awareness and Information Centre. John-Roger is reported to have had unethical sexual relationships with members.

[edit] Biography

[edit] Early Life and Education

Hinkins was born to a Mormon family in the small mining town of Rains, Utah on on September 24, 1934. He was raised and schooled in Utah and received his Bachelor of Science degree in psychology from the University of Utah in 1958, before moving to San Francisco to work as an insurance claims adjustor.

In 1960 he received his Secondary teaching credential as well other credentials such as a California "secondary life teaching credential" and post-graduate work at University of California, Los Angeles, University of Southern California and California State University, Los Angeles. He then began teaching English at Rosemead High School in a suburb of Los Angeles.[14]

[edit] The Mystical Traveler

In late 1963 Hinkins had a near-death experience while undergoing surgery for a kidney stone after which he fell into a nine-day coma. After this experience, Hinkins was aware of another ‘spiritual personality’ that had superseded / merged with his previous personality. He began to refer to himself as “John-Roger’ in recognition of this transformation.[14]

John-Roger talks about his consciousness shift resulting from the surgery in his book with Pauli Sanderson “When Are You Coming Home? A Personal Guide To Soul Transcendence”. He describes his experience during the surgery that all things were “in the Light” – that everything was completely safe, protected and perfect. Following the surgery he began to experience this higher consciousness expressing more and more into the physical world – i.e. that he could see and perceive everything taking place in this physical world as being perfect in some greater sense, “as being part of a greater whole, part of the highest good”. In the face of challenging and difficult times, he was able to move to this peaceful neutrality and loving that he experienced during surgery. He further explains that his behavior changed; he became “more understanding, kinder, and able to respond and act in a way that was based on the good of everyone, not on his own personal perspective.[15]

John-Roger termed this consciousness the Mystical Traveler Consciousness and claims that he was given the ‘keys’ or began to ‘anchor’ the Mystical Traveler Consciousness on the planet after the surgery.[16]

From the Glossary of ‘Fulfilling Your Spiritual Promise’, ‘Mystical Traveler Consciousness’ is defined as energy from the highest source of Spirit whose purpose on Earth is to awaken people to the awareness of their Souls. This consciousness is always embodied through a physical form on Earth.[16]

From ‘The Wayshower Booklet’ John-Roger describes this transition:

“I underwent a tremendous transition and was brought into the consciousness of the Mystical Traveler, a consciousness that is totally alive, totally dedicated, totally devoted to the supreme power that is God, that is life, that is love. In retrospect I knew that it was the consciousness of the Traveler that had pulled me out of the water, seen me through car accidents, and walked with me through lies and deceits, through agony and pain, knowing full well that I was going to come out perfect in Soul consciousness.”

Students of MSIA, i.e. those with an active subscription to either Soul Awareness Discourses or Soul Awareness Tapes are assisted by the spiritual consciousness known as the Mystical Traveler Consciousness. The Mystical Traveler Consciousness works with students to assist them in clearing karma and of breaking free of the cycle of incarnation this lifetime – this work is done inwardly, on the spiritual levels, as each student’s consciousness allows.[16]

The MSIA Teachings claim that there have always been someone on the planet “anchoring” the Mystical Traveler Consciousness to assist those Souls ready to awaken further into Spirit. According to John-Roger, he held the ‘keys’ to the Mystical Traveler Consciousness from December 1963 until they were passed to John Morton , the current Spiritual Director of MSIA, in December 1988.

[edit] MSIA Founder

Around this time John-Roger explored a variety of different spiritual teachings, including Eckankar, and there has been speculation regarding his level of involvement with this group. Religious scholar James R. Lewis reported on this matter in a book he published about John-Roger and the Movement of Spiritual Inner Awareness, that while John-Roger acknowledges that he studied with Eckankar, he was not formally initiated into the group.[14] Writer David C. Lane has produced a substantive body of criticism directed at MSIA, much of which focuses on the role of John-Roger. Lane also claims of Hinkins is that he uses spiritual teachings taken from Paul Twitchell's Eckankar, who, he claims, took them in turn from Radha Soami Satsang Beas, with which Lane is actively involved. MSIA has also been referred to as an "offshoot" of Lifespring.[17]

About five years after his postcoma realization in around 1968, John-Roger began to hold gatherings as an independent spiritual teacher in homes of friends initially in Santa Barbara and Thousand Oaks, and then spreading across Southern California until the demand was such that he was doing five seminars a week at different homes in different cities. During this time he continued working as a high school English teacher until 1971, in which year the Church of the Movement of Spiritual Inner Awareness was formally incorporated.[14]

In October 1971 the first edition of MSIA’s community newspaper was printed. Initially called ‘On the Light Side’, then in July 1972 the name changed to ‘The Movement Newspaper’, then in July 1988 the name changed to the current name ‘The New Day Herald’. The New Day Herald is currently circulated to MSIA members and friends. An online version of the New Day Herald is now available, and is available via an email subscription called eNDH, which is a free email subscription service.

In 1974 MSIA purchased 3500 West Adams Blvd in Los Angeles, California, informally called Prana, and now publicly known as Peace Awareness Labyrinth & Gardens. This building is the Global Head Quarters for the Movement of Spiritual Inner Awareness and Peace Theological Seminary and College of Philosophy. Since 1974 until current day, students of MSIA have lived and live at ‘Prana’ as part of the Seminary program offered by Peace Theological Seminary and College of Philosophy, the prime purpose of the seminary being to study MSIA’s teachings, and “to serve more than at other places” .[16]

[edit] Bestselling Author

John-Roger has written 55 books, including one #1 NY Times Bestseller and four other Bestsellers. Refer to 'List of Works - Books' for a full list of publications, with publication date and ISBN number.[1]

[edit] Film Producer & Writer

John-Roger partnered with actor Jsu Garcia in 1998 in the creation of Scott J-R Productions a film production company committed to creating spirit filled films.

Their first full length feature was "My Little Havana", followed by the successful Spiritual Warriors inspired by John-Roger's bestselling book 'Spiritual Warrior: The Art of Spiritual Living'.

[edit] Other Non-Profit Organizations' Founder

In 1976 John-Roger founded Koh-e-nor University. It was later renamed University of Santa Monica. Drs. Ron and Mary Hulnick joined the University in 1980.

In 1977 John-Roger founded Peace Theological Seminary & College of Philosophy as an educational non-profit organization for MSIA students to undertake undergraduate workshops, courses and retreats, and also postgraduate programs; a Master and Doctorate of Spiritual Science.

In 1978 John-Roger created the Insight organization with friend and fellow MSIA Minister Russell Bishop. Insight Seminars is an international non-profit educational organization headquartered in Santa Monica, California and operating throughout the world including North America, South America, Australia, Europe, Russia, the Caribbean and the Middle East. According to their website, more than one million people have graduated from the Insight Seminar Series.

In 1979 John-Roger co-founded Atman Travel, initially created to assist in the travel preparations required by John-Roger’s growing and extensive travel with MSIA and PTS students around the world. During the late 70s, 80s and 90s, John-Roger lead groups of up to 150 MSIA students on various spiritual retreats all over the world. Called Peace Awareness Trainings, John-Roger and students visited such places as the former USSR, Yugoslavia, China, Japan, Israel, Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, and throughout Africa, South America, North America, Australia and Europe.

Also in 1979, John-Roger founded the Heartfelt Foundation, a volunteer-driven 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to serving and assisting people in any form of need. Over 90% of all donations received go directly to those whom the Foundation serves.

John-Roger founded the Institute for Individual and World Peace in 1982, also a volunteer-driven 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to studying, identifying and presenting the processes that lead to peace. IIWP owns the Windermere Ranch, a 142 acre property in the Santa Ynez mountains in the Santa Barbara county. ...

According to ‘Fulfilling Your Spiritual Promise’ – a three volume book encompassing most of MSIA’s teachings, in June 1988 John-Roger ‘passed’ the keys to the Mystical Traveler Consciousness to John Morton, who is currently Spiritual Director of the Movement of Spiritual Inner Awareness.[16]

[edit] International Public Speaker and Peacemaker

From the years of 1971 through to January 2009, John-Roger has given over 6,000 lectures, most of which have been recorded on audio or video by NOW Productions and many are available through MSIA.

John-Roger has met with many influential people all around the world, including Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, *** and Mother Theresa. John-Roger received the Peacemaker of the Year award (World Art Expressions) in 2000.[5]

[edit] Present Day

John-Roger currently lives in Los Angeles, California, and still participates in some MSIA and PTS annual events. His public speaking circuit is now very limited, however, per the PTS website and the Insight Seminars website (respectively), John-Roger is scheduled to speak at both MSIA's Annual Conference in July 2009, and at Insight's Best of Super II training in May 2009. He is still an active advisor and member of the board on many of the above organizations he founded.

[edit] Media and Controversy

During the late 80s and early 90s, John-Roger was investigated by publications such as People magazine, Playboy, the Los Angeles Times and Vanity Fair. MSIA and John-Roger were branded by the media as a cult.[14]. In 1994, a former adherent Peter McWilliams published Life 102: What to Do When Your Guru Sues You, which claimed John-Roger had repeatedly abused his power as guru. McWilliams also alleged that John-Roger had falsely claimed co-authorship of books that McWilliams had written alone.

Two former MSIA staffers, Toso and Wesley Whitmore, recall that in "contrast to his public behavior, John-Roger in private was often angry, vindictive and bizarre, occasionally shouting that he was under attack from negative forces." The pair said that their devotion to John-Roger kept them from addressing these issues.[18]

The media attention drew the interest of James R. Lewis. Lewis, an academic who researches new religious movements, conducted a study of John-Roger and the Movement of Spiritual Inner Awareness. Lewis stated that he did not consider MSIA a cult.[14].
