Roland Ruby (born December 1, 1966) is an American composer, lyricist and playwright. As a singer/musician, is best known for hiring the Harlem Gospel Choir to perform his composition Mass for Mankind (Gloria Culpa) on his press kit and turning it into the feature film Whatever Happened to Roland Ruby? A Docudramedy Featuring the 9 Selfish Acts of Nazzy the Nosey Kitty, which stars a cat puppet, played by Norma Dunkelberger. It also features actors Brad Thomason, Kelly Danger, Amanda Romeo and comic Chris Calogero. The film, which spoofs the music industry, was packaged with the second studio album, First Kisses and Final Requests. Debut CD Todavia Nos Queremos features all lyrics in Spanish.
On studio albums, writes and performs songs in Spanish, English, French and even the ancient Latin. When performing live with the Roland Ruby Orchestra, sings and plays upright bass, guitar or piano. In the studio, usually only sings and plays guitar. According to IMDB, current work in progress is "The Return of the Jersey Devil, A Roland Ruby Musical." Is represented by ASCAP.
Born in Quito, Ecuador, in 1966 to parents of Spanish/Italian acestry. Emigrated to Washington Heights, New York City in 1968. Raised in New York City and central New Jersey. Graduated from Sayreville War Memorial High School in 1985 and in 1989, from Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey, double majoring in English and Sociology. Lived in the Republique neighborhood of Paris, France in 1991, after running with the bulls in Pamplona Spain.
Studied upright bass, jazz and composition under German composer Christian Fabian, veteran of the Lionel Hampton Big Band. Fabian would eventually play bass on the first two Ruby studio albums and serve as their Producer.
His father is a New York State Licensed Civil Engineer who has owned and run his own firm in Manhattan since the early 80's. Ruby has two older siblings; a brother in New Jersey and a sister in New York.
Considered a slightly eccentric recluse, Ruby mostly spends his time between New York City and Hoboken, New Jersey where he shares his condo with "Blanca," a white, Persian Longhair cat that served as the model for Nazzy the Nosey Kitty. Often works out his lyrics while riding his Kawasaki Vulcan motorcycle. Wears trademark black hat over long, thinning grey hair.
