The manhua Three Kingdoms (三國志, Sānguó Zhì; known to Japanese audiences as Sangokushi) illustrated by Lee Chi Ching was based on the Japanese novel Sangokushi Meigentan of Yū Terashima (the novel itself is loosely based on the historical records of the Three Kingdoms Era of China). As a popular manhua in both Hong Kong and Japan, it was the first Hong Kong-originated manhua to be published in cooperation with Japanese publishing houses. It was first published in 1991.
Its sequel Three Kingdoms: The Last Chapter (三國志 完結編, Sānguó Zhì: Wánjiē Biān, known to Japanese audiences as Sangokushi: Kanketsuhen) told the more detailed history after Zhuge Liang's death, beginning since Gongsun Yuan's rebellion.
