General elections were held in Romania on 20 May 1990.[1] They were the first elections after the fall of the Communist regime, and also the first public presidential elections.[1] Ion Iliescu was elected President, whilst the National Salvation Front won 263 of the 395 seats in the Chamber of Deputies and 91 of the 118 seats in the Senate.
