Route 404, usually referred to as Menachem Begin Expressway (or Begin Boulevard) is an urban freeway in western Jerusalem named after sixth Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin. Local Jerusalemites simply refer to it as 'Begin' (pron. IPA 'bei-gin). The road follows a north-south path that connects key neighbourhoods and commercial areas, as well as several city arteries and national routes. Begin Expressway is made of the central section, which was completed in 1998, and the northern extension to Highway 443 to Modi'in, which was completed in late 2002[1] and merges with Highway 1 to the Tel Aviv area. It is equipped with noise barriers in many of its sections. The road is called Jerusalem Road 4 in internal Jerusalem Municipality documentation and Road 50 in the Moriah-Jerusalem Development Corporation documentation. Part of the northern extension is marked as national Highway 45.

[edit] Future plans
A plan to widen Begin Boulevard from 4 to 6 lanes and extend it as a freeway past its current southern terminus to connect with Route 60 at the Tunnels Road in Gilo is in various stages of construction and approval.[2][3][4][5] Work began in 2010 to widen the highway between Givat Mordechai Interchange and Golomb Junction. At the same time, reconstruction of sewer lines further south was started in order to accommodate the lowering of the highway to pass under Golumb and local streets next to the Malha Mall, Teddy Stadium and the Jerusalem Malha Railway Station with interchange access to these locations. Past the railway station, the highway will be "cut-and covered" to create a tunnel under the neighborhood of Sharafat where it will connect to Dov Yosef Boulevard to Gilo. Several plans are still being considered for the final extension (as a tunnel or a surface road) through the neighborhood of Beit Safafa to Route 60.[6][7] The total cost for the project is 750 million Shekels.[3]
