Rudy Pérez (born 1958) is a Cuban American composer, producer and sound engineer specializing in Latin ballads (although he has composed in other genres as well) whose songs have been very successful. He is considered one of the most outstanding creators in the field of international pop music.[1] His ability to write and produce hits makes him one of the most sought-out producer/songwriters in the music industry.[1] A Rudy Pérez song usually guarantees immediate success.[1] His compositions have achieved numerous top ten hits during last 20 years and some of them have remained in the top position of the charts for many consecutive weeks (between 9 and 13 weeks).[1][2]During the last 30 years, he has produced more than 70 albums [3], composed over 1,000 songs and has written and produced hits for international artists such as Julio Iglesias, Raúl di Blasio, Jaci Velasquez, Cristian Castro, Christina Aguilera, Luis Fonsi, Marc Anthony, Jennifer López, Luis Miguel and José Feliciano among others. [1] He won the Hot Latin Songs, being also the first Hispanic composer and producer to win this award.[1]He was chosen as producer of the year for four consecutive years[4] Also, the success of the songs he has composed and produced did him earned 30 gold records and 50 platinum and his work has been nominated also for 19 Latin Grammy, of which he won 5.[5] He also has been voted the most important Latin composer and won the title of Producer of the Decade in 2010, awarded by Billboard to the most successful producer which has held over ten years the public's preference lists.[4]He was elected the first president of the Florida branch (now a full chapter) of NARAS, and was fundamental in the establishment of the first Latin Grammy Awards, which premiered in 2000.[5][6]

Rudy Pérez was born in 1958,[7] in Pinar del Río, Cuba.[8] His family professed the Baptist religion (his grandfather was Baptist minister[7][6]). Since he was two years old he sang perfectly in tune the songs he heard and he used as an instrument any object.[9]

When he had 7 years his family (he, his parent, two sister and a brother) emigrated to United States, [8][4]narrowly escaping the Castro Communist Regime.[6] They moved to Miami, settling in the African American neighborhood Liberty City.[8][4] He discovered his interest for music as a child, when he heard music of composer and pianist Frédéric Chopin.[4] Hearing Chopin inspired him to want to be a musician and playing the piano. At this age (seven years), Pérez sang in the choir and play in the Baptist church in the neighborhood, [8][5]since the ministers of the church was taught him to sing and play the guitar, piano and battery in the churches although he could not pay classes[6]. In addition, influenced by the great African-American community that is in your neighborhood, he be introduced in the black music, especially R&B and gospel music.[8][5]Althought him also brought up listening others music genre such as Bolero and Rock Music. [10] Eventually, he began to wish have an electric guitar and to join a musical band. However, their parents did not have much money as for buy a guitar. For this reason, he got a job at age 12 in a company that manufactured barbed of wire.[7] [6] So, after a year he was able bought a guitar althought he wasn't able to play for three months, because his hands were cut up from working with barbed wire. After, he started taking private guitar lessons.[6]

Perez left studying to join several rock bands [6] [7][5]in his neighborhood until he was invited to join the group Pearly Queen [7][5](a Top 40 cover band, which was very successful in Miami in 1973), when he had 15 year. The group won a contract to play in all Big Daddy Flanigan Clubs in the U.S. and Canada-90 clubs playing five sets a night, five or six nights a week. He remained in the group for five years. In these clubs he learned to produce music. They sang in English and had to play hit songs of the moment. Because he had to make arrangements for those songs, Perez decided to learn to do musical arrangements and recordings. They had to play hit songs of the moment. Later, he began working as a gofer at Miami Sound Studios, in studies of Carlos Granado[8][5][6], so he could learn engineering. Indeed, soon, Perez established himself as a talented engineer who was very much in demand[6]. In 1983, he began to stay in North Miami on 30th Street. He cleaned and slept here, because he was going through a divorce. He was determined to record their own songs and he would not give tax for the bands of his friends. Perez gave his songs to top arrangers who would ask for his material. [7][8][5] [11]After a while, however, he wasn't comfortable with the changes being made. So, he decided to make these songs the way I felt them.[6] One day the owner, Pablo Cano, heard a ballad he had written and he decided to do an album with Rudy. This album was what made that Jose Menendez, who was then working at RCA Records, decided to hire him.

This is where he became a producer. A few weeks later, while he was on a promotional tour of Pablo Cano, in Puerto Rico, he met José Feliciano, to that Menendez him had played their version of "¿Qué voy a hacer sin tí?" (What Am I Going to Do Without You?). Feliciano asked him to produce his next album. [6][7][8][5] [11]Rudy produced most of "Ya soy tuyo"´s album (I'm already yours) by José Feliciano and this album reached number one with "Me has echado al olvido" (you was thrown into Oblivion).[7][8][5][11] This album also won two Grammy Awards Nominations for the Producer of album and song "Ella" (She) in 1985, which made return to Feliciano to the Classification of more important Latinos (he not occupy that position since long ago). Thank to this album, Rudy became professor of production and musical composition of their albums for two decades.[5][11]

In 1986, with the song "Ya Soy Tuyo" ´(I am already for you), recorded by José Feliciano, earned Rudy Pérez a Grammy Award for Producer of "Best Latin Pop Performance" and in 1988 he was first time elected "Producer of Year". In 1993, he won another Grammy Award for Producer and Songwriter for the "Best Latin Pop Album "Aries" Recorded by Luis Miguel.

In 1994, Rudy Pérez pitched his first (and only) album: "Sencillos y otros" (Singles and others), whose most sounded song was "Mi manera de querer" (My way of loving). In 1997, Pérez wrote and produced the spectacular career launching record "Lo Mejor De Mi" for Mexican Balladeer Cristian Castro (BMG US Latin) an album that yielded the hits "Lo Mejor de Mí" [1][2]which spent a precedented 90 weeks on the charts, "Despues De Ti…Que?, and "Si Tú Me Amaras". This album reached #1 on Hot Latin Tracks of 1997 and it also received a Grammy Award nomination for Grammy Award for Best Latin Pop Album of 1998. The title track was included in the 1999 compilation recording Billboard Latin Music Awards Superstar Hits. A chart-topping album that, along with "De hoy En Adelante" and "Una Voz En El Alma" of Millie, also composed by Rudy Pérez, won an ASCAP Award in the 2000. In that year (1997) Ricky Martin right also reached #1 on Hot Latin Tracks of 1997 and was included in the 1999 compilation recording Billboard Latin Music Awards Superstar Hits. In 1999 he also got the Ace Awards for "Senor Bolero" for "Album of the Year" by José Feliciano Recorded. He also won a concession of the dove through the production of the album by Christian artist Jaci Velasquez "Llegar A Ti" in 1999 and yielding the beautiful ballad "Solo Tú" which went top 10 on Billboard's Latin chart. In this year, he gets the ASCAP Award as "Songwriter of the Year".

In 2000, Rudy Pérez produced the album by Luis Fonsi, "Eterno" [1][2] [10]and he composed seven of the thirteen songs on the album, including the success "Imagíname Sin Ti" and its English version (imaginame without you).

In 2001, After the success of their production of Spanish album by Jaci Velasquez, Rudy decides to produce Spanish-language album by Christina Aguilera "Mi Reflejo", for which he came into contact with Ron Fair RCA. This album became one of the more successful albums in Spanish in the world making the sale of 1 million copies in the U.S. and another 2.5 million in the rest of the world and awards, together with 2001 a Latin Grammy for "Best Female Pop Album". [10][1][2]The success of this album and the Grammy Award he received enabled him to work with great success Anglophone artists in the United States or the world, producing and composing songs in Spanish for singers like Westlife,or Michael Bolton. He also wrote songs on all albums from Il Divo, and he produced Beyoncé's Spanish album "Back to B-Day", nominated for Grammy. After Rudy's work in the music of these artists, they decided that he also worked with them in their songs in English. Thus, his work with Jaci Velasquez, produced the song "Imagine Me Without You", which was adapted into English of the song produced earlier for he to Luis Fonsi "Imaginame sin ti" and it was nominated for a CMA - Dove Award for Best Song of the Year. The success of many of his songs have managed to achieve these reach the top ten hits. In 2002, Perez produced and composed some song of album by Luis Fonsi Amor secreto (between them, the single "Quisiera poder olvidarme de tí"), which is the singer's second album in having songs produced and composed by him. In this year the song he produced for Pilar Montenegro, "Quitame ese hombre", was the first to hit the number 1 while in this position for 13 consecutive weeks.[1][2] After this, he continued composing and producing songs that also have to tear up at the billboard and have also reached No. 1 on it.[1] Like Pilar Montenegro, another of his songs have reached number one, remained for many weeks, as is the case of the song "El Dolor De Tu Presencia" by Jennifer Peña, also produced in 2002, remained at No. 1 for nine weeks.[1][2] Thus, during that time, his productions were able, together, stay 22 consecutive weeks at no. 1. In this year, Rudy Pérez also worked on the album Jordi "Tú no sospechas" (You have no idea), in which he was responsible for 11 tracks. The album was released on October 8, 2002 To which was added a 1st single which gave title track, produced by veteran stars as Alejandro Jaén.[1] The song "Tú no sospechas" was the only song on the album that sounded all over the U.S. and some countries of Latin America, appearing in the charts most important of these countries.[12] In 2004, Rudy Pérez created his own record label: Rudy Pérez Enterprises, RPE. In 2005, Rudy Pérez was elected as a Latino producer / songwriter of the year. On April 23, 2007, the global electronic community elHood.com announced a revolutionary collaboration with Rudy Pérez and DIGA Entertainment. This union allows Perez to produce a series of musical projects directly with music fans. The first project was an album for singer and actress Pilar Montenegro[13] He also won in January 2010 the title "Producer of the Decade" award from Billboard to the producer who had more success over ten years in public preference lists.[4]

Rudy Pérez has also composed and produced numerous songs [1]and film soundtracks for television[5]. He have played in movies, soap operas, sitcoms, world music specials, commercials or music television channels such as temporary officers. Rudy wrote and produced music for advertising companies like AT&T for which he wrote and produced the music for the "True Voice" and "Leadership" advertising campaigns, sung by Jon Secada. Thus, Perez composed the original song online Univision, which was produced in 1995 and still works.[1] He also composed the central theme of the special Valentine of Beverly Hills, 90210, "Come as you are".[11][14] In 1992 he was hired by Disney to work on pre-production on the song "Colors of the Wind" for the animated film "Pocahontas". But her songs have been directed not only by singers, cinema and television: Between the end of the nineties and early XXI century, he wrote and produced the official Olympic song for Telemundo Olympic coverage of simultaneous historical s / NBC 'in English and Spanish and sung by Michael Angelo.[1]

Rudy also wrote the football song "Vamos al Mundial" (Let The World), the official song of the 2002 World Cup which was conducted by Jennifer Peña. In 2003, Perez launched a scholarship program of the ASCAP Foundation (Rudy Pérez Songwriting), which allows to Hispanic composers who have had little success in composicions study at prestigious music schools worldwide.[1]

His single also been used for breakups, makeups, courtships, wedding dances, babymaking, proms, self-pity sessions and bouts of teenage melodrama.[2]

Rudy Pérez has one daughter with his first wife, Betsy (with who he married to 19 year of older [8]); and he have four children with his second wife.[14] According to him, life inspired by his songs, however, he only writes about what he would like to live. He admires to the artist Frédéric Chopin, Giacomo Puccini, George Gershwin, The Beatles, Brian Wilson, Charles Aznavour, Stevie Wonder and Manuel Alejandro.[9]

  • Before of start his music career, while he worked for Miami Sound Studios, Rudy Pérez was decided to compose only English song, until that he listening the Julio Iglesias's song "Abrázame" (Hold me) when he was young and was going through a divorce. Since this moment, Pérez decided start to write songs in Spanish.[7]
