Södertörn University (Swedish: Södertörns högskola) is a public university college located in Flemingsberg and the larger area called Södertörn, in Stockholm County, Sweden. In 2008, it had 5,800 students. It uses the name "Södertörn University" in English, although it has not been granted full university status by the Swedish government.[2]

[edit] History
The university college was established in 1996 by the Parliament of Sweden, because the number of students in the Stockholm area, particularly at Stockholm University, was deemed as too high.
[edit] Status
Södertörn högskola is a högskola (university college), and by Swedish definitions it is not a university. When the institution was founded, the prospect was to develop the högskola (college) into a full university[2] at a later point. Consequently, Södertörn högskola applied for full university status and the right to award doctoral degrees in 2002, and in a updated form again in 2006 together with an independent evaluation in its favour[2]. In 2004, it also applied to form a collegiate university together with Karolinska Institutet and the Royal Institute of Technology, which has not been decided upon yet. In March 2009, the Swedish government, which is responsible for all public educational institutions, issued a statement saying that it would not lift any more colleges to university status in the future, and that it would decline all further applications[3], thus cementing the college status for Södertörn högskola.
Despite the government decision, the eight municipalities of Södertörn sent another request to the Swedish government that the university college be lifted to full university status[4]. Contrary to its legal status in Sweden, Södertörn högskola continues to call itself a "university" in its English publications. Also, its main campus in Huddinge is named "Universitetsområdet" (the university area) on public signs.
[edit] BEEGS
Södertörn University hosts BEEGS, the "Baltic and East European Graduate School", a project intended as a way to further studies on the Baltic region and Eastern Europe in cooperation with Stockholm University. PhD students that apply are accepted and are accommodated and receive a full salary to finish their theses. The project is funded by the Swedish Foundation for Baltic and East European Studies (Östersjöstiftelsen). Södertörn does not possess the right to award doctorates itself, and it therefore signed an agreement with the University of Stockholm that their doctoral students receive their degree upon completion of the programme in Södertörn from Stockholm University instead.
[edit] Södertörn University Library
Södertörn University Library[5] is the library of Södertörn University, and is housed in a new library building which opened in 2004.
