The Shanmugha Arts, Science, Technology & Research Academy, known as SASTRA University, is a deemed university in the town of Thirumalaisamudram, Thanjavur district, Tamil Nadu, India. Undergraduate and postgraduate engineering courses are its focus. It offers undergraduate and post graduate courses in Engineering, Science, Education, Management and Arts, including some doctoral programmes.[1]

SASTRA University started in 1984 in the form of Shanmugha College of Engineering, affiliated to the Bharathidasan University, Trichy. In 2001 it was renamed as Shanmugha Arts, Science, Technology & Research Academy. It is the first to get 'Deemed University status in Tamil Nadu. Srinivasa Ramanujam Center at Kumbakonam is affiliated to it.
In 2011, software company Tata Consultancy Services set a world record of recruiting 1,755 students from SASTRA, the largest recruitment by any company in the world from a single campus.It was broken by Vellore Institute of Technology when CTS recruited over 1800 students.[2]

It has have received approval from the Bar Council of India to teach Law.[3]
Campus facilities [edit]
The campus occupies a built up area of over 2,000,000 square feet (190,000 m2)[4] and houses a population of over 9,000 students.
The institute has eight boys hostels and four girls hostels providing accommodation to over 5000 boys and 3000 girls. There are facilities for sports and body building.
Admissions [edit]
Admissions are through merit (marks from HSC and JEE (Main) and NRI Quota). The counseling is usually done during the later half of June with the college opening for freshers in the month of July.
Events and accolades [edit]
The university has been recognized as a Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (SIRO) by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, government of India. It was ranked 10th among private engineering colleges in the country by Outlook 2008. Its School Of Chemical and Biotechnology was ranked 1st among all private institutions in the country and 2nd (overall) in India.[5]
It has been highly appreciated by the Washington Accord team. The Washington Accord is an agreement that provides mobility for Indian engineering graduates around the world. There are nine countries that are signatories and four countries are provisional members. The Accord team visited India in 2005 and visited three government institutions and SASTRA to assess the quality of engineering education. It was impressed by the undergraduate facilities and expressed satisfaction about the universities quality and standards in its educational activities.
Festivals [edit]
In 2006, the Cult team, backed by the Dean of Planning & Development, Dr. S. Vaidhyasubramaniam GMP (Harvard), revived the intra-college cultural fests that were once held. The name suggested by the students, "Carpe Diem", to invoke one's talents and seize the day, was chosen by the dean, over his own suggestion of "Kuruksastra", a portmanteau of Kurukshetra, the site of the legendary war mentioned in the Indian epic Mahabharata, and SASTRA.
Carpe Diem '06 was a huge success, followed by Carpe Diem '07. After two years of intra-college fests, the university decided to conduct its first-ever inter-college fest and went with the name originally suggested by the dean: Kuruksastra.
Kuruksastra is a war of talent in the competitions. The fest includes English Literary events, Telugu, Hindi and Tamil events, Arts, Music, Dance, Dramatics and Gaming.
At the same time, the university's first inter-college technical fest, Daksh, was also conducted. It was a long weekend (Friday–Sunday), starting with Daksh and ending with KurukSastra.
The first edition of Kuruksastra was held on 2–3 March 2007.[6] The second edition of Kuruksastra was on 6–9 March 2008. It started the tradition of hosting musical celebrities for a "Pro Nite" show with singers such as Shankar Mahadevan, Karthik, Mahathi, Pop Shalini and Suchitra. It had over 1200 participants, making it one of the largest such festivals in the country.[7]

- The Studio - The dramatics club, an offshoot of the ELS, which conducts stage plays and encourages budding actors.
- The Artz club - A club that brings out the best art works of the students.
- ELS - The English Literary Society, which is a club that conducts literary events such as JAM (Just-a-minute), Dumb Charades, Crossword, Debate and Quizzes on a daily basis.
- HLC - The Hindi Literary Club, which conducts literary events related to Hindi such as Bas Ek Pal(Hindi JAM), Dumb Charades (every thing related India), Hindi Antakshari and Quiz on a daily basis.
- GLOSS - The Open Source society.
- RCS - The Robotics Club.
- Celeritas - The physics forum.
- ACE - Association of Computer Engineers. This group is engaged in spreading knowledge about the cutting edge advancements happening in the field of Computer Science.
- AXIS - Association to eXcel In Software of the Department of Computer Applications.
- BE@S - Bio engineering and Medical Nanotechnology Students Association at Sastra, Organizing Symposiums based on life sciences and releasing magazine 'in vivo'.
- ECS - Embedded Club. The members engage themselves in learning and innovating in the field of embedded computing.
- TECS - The Electronics Club @ SASTRA.
- MECS - Microsoft Enthusiasts' Community.
