SMW+ is an open source software bundle composed of the wiki application MediaWiki along with a number of its extensions. It is produced by the German software company Ontoprise GmbH. SMW+'s extensions include, most notably, Semantic MediaWiki and the Halo Extension. Cumulatively, SMW+ functions as a semantic wiki, and is also meant to serve as an enterprise wiki for use within companies, for applications such as knowledge management and project management. It is claimed to be especially helpful for cataloguing risks informally identified in the early stages of a project [1] and later quantified using export facilities, e.g. to Microsoft Excel.
Ontoprise offers other tools to integrate more fully with SharePoint than most other mediawiki-based options, and offers the SMW+ platform in a number of formats including a Windows installer, Linux installer and VMware image.
SMW+ emerged from Project Halo, a research project meant to provide a platform for collaborative knowledge engineering for domain experts in the biology, chemistry and physics at the first stage.
SMW+ is being used amongst others by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO to power an online encyclopedia for oceanography.
